About South African Association for Food Science and Technology, SAAFOST

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is the association of food science, technology and other professionals serving South Africa’s food and allied industries. SAAFoST aims at increasing the knowledge base of food science and technology by encouraging scientific research, a membership magazine publication, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, meetings and assisting in educational activities. The company is non-profit and mainly run by volunteers, with around 2000 members across Southern Africa.

SAAFoST has established the SAAFoST Foundation, who will be responsible for the administration of SAAFoST academic bursaries, awards, and prizes.

SAAFoST Bursary

SAAFoST Foundation is inviting all interested and qualified students to apply for bursaries in the field of Food Science and Technology. The SAAFoST Foundation bursaries will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, employment equity and demonstrated potential.

The bursary programme will cover the actual tuition fees from the tertiary institution according to the statement of account in the name of the bursary holder to a maximum of R35 000.00 per year. The payment will be given directly to the tertiary institution every semester depending on the bursary holder’s academic results in the first semester.

SAAFoST bursary programme is offered for Matriculants, Undergraduates, BSc Hon/B-Tech Students, and Journalism Postgraduates.

SAAFoST Bursary Conditions:

• Bursary holders are required to sign a contract as an agreement to the bursary terms and conditions
• SAAFoST Foundation makes the final decision regarding bursary granting and reserves the right not to award a bursary.
• Bursary holders are required to provide six-monthly academic progress reports to the SAAFoST Foundation which should include participation in SAAFoST activities.
• The bursary will be converted into a loan repayable in equal installments for the following reasons:
  • Interruption of studies which includes changing courses
  • Failure to complete the studies within the required period
  • Failure of any year or semester of study
• Failure to comply with the conditions and requirements of the bursary program will result in the suspension of the funding for the following year. Should the recipient comply with the conditions and requirements in the subsequent year, including carrying over courses from the previous year, SAAFoST Foundation will refund to the recipient all the suspended tuition fees and the funding shall continue. However, no repeated courses, subjects or modules shall be paid for by the SAAFoST Foundation.
• For Matriculants: Registration for SAAFoST membership is required within the first three months of registration at the tertiary institution. Students must remain active members of SAAFoST for the duration of the study.

FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation are awarding bursaries to Matric and Undergraduate students in the field of Food Science and Technology.

Bursaries are awarded based on 3 major factors – academic merit demonstrated potential and employment equity.

The bursary award will cover tuition fees up to an amount of R35 000 per year.

Matric students:

Application review period – October 2020
Bursary award announcement – November 2020

Undergraduate students:

Application review period – January to February 2020
Bursary award announcement – February 2020

SAAFoST Bursary ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Matric students:

• South African citizen
• Have been a resident within South Africa for a minimum of 3 years before applying
• Completed Further Education & Training Certificate (FETC) (General) qualification OR the equivalent
• Achieved a minimum of level 5 (60-69%) for Physical Science and Mathematics (as well as Life Science, but not mandatory)
• Enrolled to study full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field
• Enrolled to study at a recognised tertiary institute in South Africa
• Be able to finish your qualification within the specified amount of time (i.e. – Undergraduate Degree upto B.Sc (Hons) = a maximum of 4 years, Diploma = a maximum of 4 years, B. Tech Degree = a maximum of 5 years)
• *Preference will be given to Matric students with strong academic results or potential

Undergraduate students:

• South African citizen OR South African permanent resident
• Have been a resident within South Africa for a minimum of 3 years before applying
• Have been a SAAFoST member for a minimum of 12 months before applying
• Enrolled to study full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field
• Enrolled to study at a recognized tertiary institute in South Africa
• Be able to finish your qualification within the specified amount of time (i.e. – Undergraduate Degree up to B.Sc (Hons) = a maximum of 3 years, Diploma = a maximum of 3 years, B. Tech Degree = a maximum of 4 years)
• *Preference will be given to students with strong academic results or potential

   • A head & shoulders passport size photo
   • ID book or RSA passport
   • For matriculants, Grade 11 final examinations and last Grade 12 examinations (Part B and C) (including FETC (G) [Further Education & Training Certificate (General)], or recognised equivalent, with an achievement rating of at least 5 in both Mathematics and Physical Science or Life Science, if available)
   • For Undergraduates, most recent academic results
   • For Part-time BSc Hon or B-Tech students, most recent academic results and a copy of BSc or Nat Dip.
   • Personal Statement (Part D) of not more than 1 A4 page describing how their food science and technology education and training will contribute in their lives and in the scientific community
   • Reference Letter (Part D) written by someone who has known the applicant in an academic ability for at least 3 years
   • For matriculants, National Benchmarking Test/ Potential Test results from the relevant Tertiary institution
   • Proof of registration for a tertiary institution for the next academic year
