Things to Note When Travelling to Abuja

1. Travel with a companion:

Venturing out on your own can be fun and adventurous but try as much as possible to go out with a city guide that knows the ins and outs of Abuja and can get you from one point to another safely. Trust is very important when dealing with people. Ask other travellers to refer you to a trusted guide. If you are unable to find one, travel in pairs and do not go out alone at night.

2. Dress Modestly:

How you dress determines how people respond to you when you ask for directions or while shopping at a store. If you overdress, you risk giving off the wrong impression and drawing unwanted attention to yourself. If you dress too scantily you risk breaking the local customs. Do dress to kill but don’t dress immodestly.

3. Getting Around in Abuja

Taxis are the most common means of transport in the city. Taxis are easily accessible at street sides and travel all routes in the city.  Online cab services like Uber are available and provide cheap and comfortable transportation around the city.

Other means of transportation include commercial motorcycles and tricycles. These vehicles travel only short distances. The tricycles often have specific routes which they ply.

4. The Most Planned City in Nigeria

In all of Africa, Abuja is the only purpose-built city. The territory was intentionally carved out to become the capital of Nigeria in 1991.  As a result, the city has the most extensive road network in the country, making every area of the city easily accessible from another. It also has a seamless transport system to boot. Abuja is divided into various sections which are all earmarked to serve specific purposes. For example, the Central Business District (home to various offices and agencies) or Asokoro (where a majority of experts and diplomatic staff are housed).

5. Don’t board any unknown vehicle

It is very important to have a contact person as you explore the city of Abuja. If for one reason or the other you cannot secure a private vehicle and driver, ask your contact person to provide you with a trusted pick-up. At desperate times, do not board unknown vehicles that promise to get you to your destination, instead use an online service to book a taxi.

6. Ask for Directions Twice:

Finding your way around Abuja can be difficult for a newbie or Johnny Just Come especially in secluded places with unidentified streets. While travelling in Lagos, make sure to ask for directions from more than one person but don’t ask people who do not look responsible or you might risk being misled.

7. Driving in Abuja

Abuja’s road conditions are fairly good. Major streets are wide, well maintained and generally well signposted. Unpaved side streets can, however, be difficult to manoeuvre. What makes driving in Abuja a challenge is the lack of skill of the other drivers; the condition of many of the vehicles and the loosely followed rules of the road. Also, care needs to be taken with the plentiful motorcycle okadas who tend to follow no rules whatsoever creating a risk to themselves and everybody else. It is useful to note that the riding of Okada motorcycles has been outlawed in Abuja City.
