Types of Licenses in Canada

Canada generally has the following types of driving licenses:

  1. G1 License
  2. G2 License
  3. G Driving License

G1 License

This is referred to as the Learner’s License or the Leaner’s Permit. This is the easiest of all the licenses and it only requires a written test. and no driving is required. It has a total of 40 multiple choice test questions with each part having 20 questions each for road rules and road signs.

To pass this test, you must have an 80% score which means you must pass at least 16 out of the 20 questions in each part. If you fail one part and pass the other, you’ll need to retake the part you failed.

Once you pass the test, you are allowed to drive although there are a few restrictions that you must adhere to else you can have your license suspended. These include:

a. You must have a G License driver in the front passenger seat to assist and supervise you.

b. You must not drive between midnight and 5.00am.

c. You are not allowed to drive on a speed higher than 80km/h.

d. You are only allowed to drive on a road that has a speed limit of 80km/h if you have a driving instructor with you.

e. Each passenger in the car must have a working seatbelt.

f. You must have zero alcohol levels in your blood system.

G2 License

The G2 Test is a road test and is harder to pass.  An instructor will accompany you to ascertain your ability to drive  a car. It is advisable to arrive at the testing venue 30 minutes before the time also take your glasses or contact lenses along if you need them to drive.

To take the test, you must have the following:

a. Learner’s Permit or License for at least 12 months.

b. Optimal and fully functioning car. Be sure to check all your lights, mirrors and oil levels before you take the test.

The instructor will be monitoring:

i. Obedience to traffic lights and signs.

ii. Parking (reverse, forward, parallel).

iii. Starting and turning off your car.

iv. Attention to the need of your seat belt, rear and side mirrors.

v. Taking U-turns and reversing.

vi. Overtaking and lane changing.

Practice all these before taking the test especially parallel parking because not getting it right leads to an automatic fail.

Restrictions

Some restrictions for this license are:

a. You must not drive if you have been drinking alcohol. Your blood-alcohol level must be zero.

b. Each person in the vehicle must have a working seatbelt.

For license holders from 19 years and below, the following restrictions apply between midnight and 5.00am:

a. In the first six months after receiving the G2 license, you are allowed to carry only one passenger aged 19 or under.

b. After six months with the G2 license and until you obtain your full G license or turn 20, you are allowed to carry up to three passengers aged 19 or under.

G Driving License

This is an advanced version of the G2 License test. It covers everything in the G2 test in addition to highway driving (lane changing and overtaking) and merging and exiting highways.

To take the test, you must have had a valid G2 license for at least 2 years. If you have completed an approved driving course, you must have had the G2 license for a period of 8 months, depending on the requirement for the Province you are moving to.

Exceptions for the Canadian Driving License

Some countries made an a Foreign License Exchange Agreement with Canada.  The agreement stipulates that migrants from Canada and these countries can exchange their driving licenses for new ones without taking the driving test.

Immigrants coming from these countries have the opportunity of exchanging their previous driving license for a Canadian driving license. This window is open for 60 days after arriving Canada. After the expiration of 60 days, the immigrant must pass through the standard procedure for getting a driving license.

The Countries that are in the Foreign License Exchange Agreement with Canada are:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • France
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan
  • United Kingdom (England, Wales and Scotland inclusive)
  • United States of America.
