Bad breath is also known as Halitosis is a foul-smelling of the mouth caused by leftover foods broken down by the teeth which were not removed from the holes in the mouth’s cavity. It doesn’t necessarily need elucidation because we are all so familiar with the causes of bad breath.

Hence, without further ado, I’m going to list down the causes of bad breath so you can start doing something about them and the remedies to cure bad breath, and by remedies, I mean easy to find resources that are right there in your house, living under the same roof with you but never realizing it could be a cure and solution to the problem you‘re having. Causes of Bad Breath

Causes of bad breath range from eating odorous foods like garlic, smoking, dry mouth, medical conditions, gum disease, and sinus conditions.

However, the primary cause of bad breath is the bacteria that build up on the back of your tongue or between your teeth, Improper brushing, Gum disease,  low carb diet, Alcohol, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Acid reflux), Diabetes, Lung infection, Certain medications, such as anti-allergic medicines and tricyclic antidepressants.

Remedies for Bad Breath

  1. BRUSH YOUR TEETH DAILY: The very first and foremost remedy is the toothpaste in your kitchen. Yea, I know you’ve been using it daily but then how do you do your brushing? You are advised to brush your teeth twice a day, in the morning and at bedtime. Some toothpaste contains fluoride which is a very dangerous element for certain bacteria. Don’t forget to change your toothbrush every two months to keep fresh.
  2. WATER: I bet you didn’t know that water is an essential remedy for curing bad breath. You can swish some amount of water in your mouth for a while, gaggle, and spit out. Water temporarily dislodges bacteria making your breath a bit better.
  3. PARSLEY: In some areas where the parsley plant grows, you can always chew on a few. It contains chlorophyll, yea, I know what you’re thinking. Chlorophyll is not only good for plants but also for the bad. It reduces bad breath giving you a feel of confidence and sensation.
  4. CLOVES: Chew a handful of cloves, fennel seeds, or aniseeds. Their antiseptic qualities help fight halitosis-causing bacteria.
  5. LEMON: Chew a piece of lemon or orange rind for a mouth- freshening burst of flavor. (Wash the rind thoroughly first.) The citric acid will stimulate the salivary glands—and fight bad breath.
  6. ORANGE: A very simple and easy to find remedy is the orange fruit. It contains vitamins that helps dislodge and kill bacteria that cause bad breath in the mouth.
  7. FLOSS: You can floss daily, in the morning and before bedtime it helps reduce bad breath.
  8. SCRAP YOUR TONGUE: Scrap your tongue every morning with a tongue scraper or spoon to remove bacteria and saliva that may cause bad breath. Hold the tip of the tongue with gauze to pull it forward in order to clean the back of the tongue

    • If you wear dentures, remove them at night and clean to get rid of bacterial buildup from food and drink.
    • Arrange regular dental checkups and cleanings.
    • Try a 30-second mouthwash rinse that is alcohol-free (unlike many off-the-shelf products). Mix a cup of water with a teaspoon of baking soda (which changes the pH level and fights odor in the mouth) and a few drops of antimicrobial peppermint essential oil. Don’t swallow it! (Yields several rinses.)
    • Raw crunchy foods clean the teeth. Apples contain pectin, which helps control food odors and promotes saliva production. Cinnamon is antimicrobial. Active cultures in yogurt help reduce odor-causing bacteria in the mouth.
  • 1 cup apple chunks.
    1 cup grated carrot
    1 cup diced celery
    ½ cup dried cranberries
    ½ cup crushed walnuts
    3 to 5 tablespoons plain nonfat yogurt
    Ground cinnamon

PREPARATION AND USE: Mix the apple, carrot, celery, cranberries, and walnuts together in a large bowl. Add yogurt by the tablespoon to moisten the mixture. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
