Why Resistance to Change Persists – Change is an inevitable part of life, yet many individuals find themselves resisting it for various reasons.
You know, change is one thing we’ll all experience whether we like it or not, prepared for it or not. However, for some reason, it’s still pretty much scares us a whole lot, especially when we don’t know the kind of change that is approaching.
So eventually, we get this burning desire to change, while on the other hand, we just wanna remain as we are. This is not intentional though, because there happen to be some underlying reasons why we really don’t want change. Some are quite known to us, while others seem obscure and subtle.
You know the thing they do say about change, that if you wanna change your life, then you’ve to change the things you do on a daily basis. For some of us, this seems impossible. It appears that we really would like to change if only we don’t have to change what we do in our daily lives, and to tell you the truth, this is quite delusional—it really is!
So in this article, we’ll be looking at 18 reasons you want to change, but still don’t want it. Take note that these reasons are not just for you to read through only. You’ve to read it and also examine the ones you know that is present in your life and address them immediately. Then you can see yourself craving for change. So here they are:
FEAR OF CHANGE
To tell you the truth, the sound of change really gives most of us the creeps. It feels like the earth is gonna fall on us whenever we hear “change”. So as it is, your fear for change wouldn’t want you to embrace change because you feel that something will always have to go wrong when change occurs. However, do you know that that fear of yours is really necessary, you’re just being over-reactive, so just get a grip of yourself already.
TOO MANY BAD HABITS
Do you know what else don’t want you to change? Your numerous bad habits. Oh, yes! Having too many bad habits is a hindrance to change when you’ve accumulated so many habits that are not-so-good over the years, you wouldn’t want to change so easily because you’ve put in so much “hard work” in it which is bad! Even if you know that such habits are detrimental, it would take more than just reading an article on “Change” to change them.
HAVING A WHAT-WILL-PEOPLE-SAY MINDSET
When you think so much of what people will say about you, change will be what you don’t wanna do even if it is changing for the better. You think they will criticize and judge you and you happen to fear criticism and judgment. The thing is, whether you’re good or bad, people will always have something to say, so, what’s the point of caring about what they think in the first place? Just get on with your life.
LACKING IN SELF-CONFIDENCE
When you don’t have enough confidence in yourself and in your future, you wouldn’t want change to happen because you don’t really know how it’ll turn out to be eventually, so this makes you resent change. Self-confidence is really that thing that makes you take bold steps and own up to your responsibilities. So, if you’re lacking in self-confidence, then it’s probably one of the reasons you don’t want change.
THOUGHTS OF FAILING
As humans, if there is really one thing we don’t want to happen to us is “failure“. We just don’t like the feeling that failing brings. But we fail to realize that there is success beneath every failure. Now when it comes to change, the thought of failing when the change arrives really would make you not want to change. You get this thought that you’ll eventually fail when something’s change and you don’t want that.
THOUGHTS OF SUCCEEDING
As it is for failing, so it is for succeeding. This might sound counterintuitive, but it’s just the truth. The thoughts of succeeding massively also would make you not want change. You may not agree with me on this one but that’s fine, but you don’t have to disregard it, just think about it for a moment. For some reason, people tend to fear success more than failure. I know it’s crazy, humans can be insane, you know.
I-STILL-HAVE-ENOUGH-TIME SYNDROME
If you’re the type of person that always think that there is still time, even enough to spare, then, you wouldn’t want to change that easily. You’ll feel that since there is still so much time, then what is the hurry of wanting to change. Well, this is just an absurd excuse. This is just an alibi to waste time unnecessarily and whether you like it or not, the change will still come eventually.
NOT WILLING TO GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
Another thing that causes you to dread change is when you’re not willing to get out of that comfy, comfort zone of yours. It seems so convenient and secure that you would want to remain there forever if it’s possible. But you deeply know it’s not. Someday, something or someone will just have to trigger you, and you’ll have no choice but to step right out of that comfort zone.
PESSIMISM
Being pessimistic, which is also the same thing as having a negative mindset, can hinder you from wanting to change. Mind you, those negative thoughts didn’t accumulate all of a sudden, it actually grew little by little and now it feels normal to think negative, which is really wrong. Even if what you’re to change to is good, your pessimism would always find a way to talk down the good side and emphasize the bad ones.
OVERFAMILIARITY WITH STATUS QUO
When you’re too familiar with your current state, whatever it may be, you wouldn’t want to change, especially for something you don’t know. And this has made quite a number of us remain stagnant and “immobile”. We’re really identified with our present situations that we feel changing will only make us miserable, and this is so not true. Having this kind of attitude won’t allow you to go further in life.
CHANGING FEELS DISCOMFORTING
With the increased rate of anxiety and tension that is coupled with change, changing will be the last thing you would want to do, or rather the thing you never want to do. Changing, whether we’re prepared for it or not can come with a little bit of discomfort, and this discomfort is really what you want to avoid, so in essence, you dread change. And this is not just peculiar to you, it is to everyone else too.
HAVING A NOTHING-HAS-TO-CHANGE MENTALITY
One other thing that can keep you from wanting change is when you’ve got a mentality that nothing has to change and this is terrible. Because, no matter how far or “close” you’ve gotten to in life, some things just have to change every now and then. I mean, what is the fun part of life if everything remains as it is? Life would be so boring and stagnant by then, that’s why change is required.
FEAR OF AN UNKNOWN CHANGE
Change can be known and unknown as well. There seems to be not much fear for that of the unknown. However, when you don’t really know exactly or vaguely the kind of change that you want to experience, you wouldn’t want to change no matter what. This is like a universal dysfunction in humans. We tend to dread the unknown more than the known even if the known might even be scarier than the unknown.
FEAR OF EXPERIENCING THE WRONG KIND OF CHANGE
It’s one thing to fear an unknown change and it’s another to fear experiencing the wrong kind of change. When you always have the fear that something will always have to go wrong in any change, changing will be difficult for you. You wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you, so instead of moving towards change, you navigate yourself against it. And the thing is you really don’t know what you’re missing out from.
BEING OKAY LIVING AVERAGE
The world we are in today is so full of average people and to tell you the truth, that is not gonna change for a long time to come because we are so okay and used to been average. This kind of mindset also hinders you from wanting change. When you’re so okay with living an average life or below average—worse of all, you wouldn’t want anything to change around you. Even if the opportunities come around to change, you still wouldn’t take it.
WHEN YOU’VE SUCCEEDED TO A POINT
Do you know that success can be a hindrance to one’s further progression in life? It sounds counterintuitive, right? Well, it’s the truth. And this applies to change too. There is a level of success you may get to in life, it feels so good and so right that you wouldn’t want that to change for anything. You feel you should just remain that way for as long as possible. And you and I know that things must surely change no matter what.
PAYING TOO MUCH ATTENTION TO CRITICS
If you’re the type that tends to care too much about your critics, then you’ll have a problem, a very big one. Not just towards change, but to every other area of your life. Just so you know, critics are critics. That’s the only thing they can do “right”. So don’t blame them for saying what they feel, blame yourself for listening to their trashy talks in the first place. A rule of thumb; just ignore critics.
WHEN ALL SEEMS “RIGHT”
Apart from the fact that you wouldn’t want to change when you succeed to a point when everything seems “alright”, even though you’ve not really succeeded, will also make you not want change. I mean, who would want to change what is already “right?” No one basically would want to do that and that’s the more reason you’ll feel more relaxed and undisturbed because everything is going “well”, as it seems.
